I often drink black coffee before training. As I often engage in low-rep sets I need my central nervous system ready to fire! As we know through research, strength is mostly neural.

This is why ephedrine is banned in the US-- it works in a similar way to caffeine (neural booster) on a much larger scale. Nonetheless, athletes still use the substance to train in the off season.

Also interesting in the way of coffee: a reasonable consumption can make you 10x less likely to have a heart attack DEPENDING ON YOUR GENETICS. It can also make you 4x as likely. It depends on whether or not your body metabolizes the caffeine molecule quickly. If you are one of the lucky ones that metabolize caffeine quickly, antioxidants are released more plentifully into the bloodstream. Otherwise, you're just stuck with one of the negative benefits of caffeine. (look up some of Berardi's work for more info!)

To me, however, a person eating a healthy diet combined with exercise should not worry about moderate coffee intake. Coffee sure as heck don't scare me!

Certainly makes sense. I drink coffee prior to my lunchtime workouts and it certainly gives me a boost.

I thought it was the caffeine jolt or maybe a psychosomatic effect related to increased energy. Whatever the case, I'll take it.
