Something that I think about all the time is what types of foods I should be eating in order to better fuel my workouts, and to aid in recovery once the exercise is done.

In an article titled “Best fuel for your workout” at MSNBC.com the fitness experts give a quick run-down of what types of foods you should look to eat before and after your reps.

Good food choices to fuel your workout include high-carbohydrate, low-fat snacks such as:

  • a banana with yogurt;
  • a whole-wheat toasted bagel with fruit spread; or
  • a quick bowl of instant oatmeal.

After your workout, it’s essential to refuel your body with a carbohydrate-protein blend, such as:

  • a peanut butter sandwich;
  • a small handful of walnuts or almonds; or
  • a fruit smoothie with some protein powder.

So there are some quick and easy suggestions to keep your diet on track, and your body fueled like it needs to be.

Don’t forget to not overdo it though!

You don’t want to eat too much food before exercising, because if you become sluggish, nauseated or throw up, you’ve lost that workout.

One last thing. Drink water and eat healthy!

Of course, don’t forget to drink water before, during and after your workout to avoid dehydration.

And remember that eating a low-fat, well-balanced diet the rest of the day will help ensure that your motor is running efficiently both during exercise and at rest.

    When running I like whole grain toast with jam before a run and a nice tall glass of chocolate milk after (nice source of protein).

      chocolate milk – for some reason that doesn’t sound as appealing as a tall glass of water after a run. πŸ™‚

    I discovered an interesting personal trick (in my home, anyway) for drinking more water: I have some of those tall beer glasses (Pilsner glasses I think), and out of curiosity I measured how much water they hold comfortably…turns out they hold 16 ounces with room to spare. I find, for some reason, that drinking out of those glasses makes it much easier for me to drink more water throughout the day. Maybe I’m imagining beer in them, I dunno. πŸ˜‰ But it works for me!

      interesting – just pretend you’re drinking beer – and you can drink more water! It might be a rude awakening when you don’t get the buzz you’re expecting!

        yeah, I’m the first to admit its a pretty low-tech hack, but it seems to be working, even sans-buzz. πŸ™‚

    After my run, I always eat bagel with peanut butter, banana and tall glass of Accelerade in orange flavor. Those are the things I crave the most after my run.

    Great post!

    Good post. I usually work out first thing in the morning, then eat a nice big breakfast. I haven’t been eating anything right when I get up though, but maybe I should. I could also use some more energy during those early sessions.

    Nice hack Metro! lol
